The Magnum Workshops in Heidelberg

We are happy to announce the first Magnum Workshops taking place in Heidelberg from September 12th to 15th, 2013. During a four-day course, led by Chris Steele-Perkins and Chien-Chi Chang, photographers and photography students will have the unique opportunity to work with these two experienced Magnum photographers. Application is now open.

Two Magnum Workshops of twelve students maximum will each offer an intensive four days practical photography course, led by the two renowned Magnum photographers. Through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst peers, candidates will develop their visual language and photographic identity, along with practical, technical and conceptual skills, and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace. Each participant will work on a photographic story in Heidelberg and its surrounding area, either relating to previous works or interests, or exploring an opportunity to work under a new discipline.

The workshops are aimed at students who already possess a good understanding of photographic practice and Workshop participants should show a good level of photographic aptitude. They will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. All students should shoot digitally. The environment of the workshop will be conducive to an intimate, creative atmosphere. The location of the workshops in Heidelberg is halle02, a cultural off-space in Heidelberg near the Heidelberg central railway station (www.halle02.de).

The workshops will end with a public projection of the work produced during the four days and a public talk with the Magnum photographers Chris Steele-Perkins and Chien-Chi Chang.

Application is now open online. The deadline for acceptance is August 19th, 2013, and qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of the merit of their work, their personal statement and the order of their application.
